Tennis courts

Several city parks offer tennis courts for public use. Some people prefer to play their matches on private courts. There are several of those to choose from, too.

Youth sports

Who has leagues?

The Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation department serves more than 4,000 children for spring baseball season alone. Spring Lake and Hope Mills have their own parks and recreation departments.

The West Fayetteville Recreation Association sponsors Little League baseball, which plays under different bylaws than the Dixie Youth leagues throughout the rest of the county.

What sports can children play?

Fayetteville-Cumberland County Parks & Recreation department sponsors fall and spring baseball and softball, football, soccer, cheerleading, basketball, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. Most sports are available for children 5-17. Football and cheerleading are for ages 7-12.

How much does it cost?

Registration generally costs between $20 and $50, depending on the league and sport.

Kim Kubit

How long have you lived in the area? Six years.

How do you get involved in the community? She takes photos at her sons' youth baseball games at Honeycutt Park. Her sons, 7-year-old Zac and 8-year-old Josh, attend The Fayetteville Academy and play for the coach-pitch Blue Jays. Kim estimates that she spends at least six hours a week at the baseball field during the season. The Kubits also enjoy water skiing on the lake near their home in Carolina Lakes north of Fayetteville.

China Young

How long have you lived in the area? "My whole life."

How do you get involved in the community? The 16-year-old South View High School student has been riding horses since she was 8. Most days you’ll find her at the Smith Lake Riding Stables, where she volunteers.

Tip: The stables offer riding lessons, children's camps, trail rides, open riding, hay rides and pony rides. For more information, call 396-4510.
