ON THE GO
Plan your route
Where do you want to go? Whether you're heading across town or around the world, here's the information you need to get started.
Trains
If you want to ride the rails, you can catch a seat on an Amtrak passenger train in either Fayetteville or Southern Pines.
Two trains travel to New York, one goes to Florida and another goes to South Carolina daily from Fayetteville's station at 472 Hay St. The station is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to 5:45 a.m. For information about the station, or to check the schedule, call 483-2653.
Southern Pines' station is at 235 N.W. Broad St. The unmanned station opens a half-hour before a train departs and closes a half-hour after a train leaves. The Silver Star, an Amtrak passenger train, stops at Southern Pines twice daily on its run between New York and Florida. The train picks up southbound passengers at 10:39 p.m. Northbound passengers board at 4:02 a.m.
To book tickets, visit www.amtrak.com or call (800) 872-7245.
Planes
Commercial airlines fly out of Fayetteville and Moore County Airport near Southern Pines to hubs in the South.
The Fayetteville Regional Airport, at 400 Airport Road, is served by US Airways and ASA/The Delta Connection. US Airways takes passengers to its Charlotte hub while ASA/The Delta Connection flies to Atlanta. To check flight times, call US Airways at (800) 428-4322 or ASA/The Delta Connection at (800) 282-3424.
If you need ground transportation, you can call one of the five rental car companies or six taxicab companies that serve the Fayetteville airport. Their phone numbers can be found under the heading "Ground Transportation" on the airport's Web site, www.flyfay.com.
Delta Air Lines also flies out of the Moore County Airport, which is three miles north of Southern Pines at 7865 N.C. 22. On select days until mid-November, a regional jet departs the airport at 4:30 p.m. and arrives in Atlanta at 5:48 p.m. To schedule, call the local Delta office after 2 p.m. at (910) 692-7644.
Rental cars can be obtained on-site from Hertz by calling 692-5858.
Buses
FAST -- the Fayetteville Area System of Transit -- runs 10 bus routes and three shuttle routes from 5:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Most routes start and end at the FAST transfer center at 147 Old Wilmington Road, which is between Person and Russell streets.
Fare machines require exact change, so remember to bring lots of quarters. The regular fare is $1, including transfers. Senior citizens and the disabled pay a 35-cent fare and a 5-cent transfer fee.
Transfer slips must be used within two hours. A special slip is not required to transfer from a bus to a shuttle.
To find out about route times and stops, call 433-1747 or visit www.fayettevilleonline.com/fast/.
For long-distance travel, visit the Greyhound station at 324 Person St. The station is open 24 hours a day. To buy a ticket or check a schedule, call 483-2580 or (800) 231-2222 or visit www.greyhound.com.
Road construction
You'll face stop-and-go traffic if you get into areas of road construction this year over the next few months. Here are some places to avoid:
- Cumberland Road is being widened from two to three lanes between George Owen Road and N.C. 59. The project will be complete in the fall of 2007.
- Shortly after that project is completed, the N.C. Department of Transportation will replace the Morganton Road bridge between Sycamore Dairy Road and Glensford Road Drive. The project should be completed by the summer of 2008.
- Road crews will begin be working on rehabilitation projects on Interstate 95 from Robeson County to U.S. 13 in Cumberland County. Some lanes will be closed at night.
