When Lavetta Henderson moved to Fayetteville, she took a job at what used to be Douglas Byrd Junior High in 1977.
Now she is the associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction at Cumberland County Schools.
Having seen the city develop over the years, Henderson said she has enjoyed living in Fayetteville.
"I like that Fayetteville is large but not too large," she said. "You can still have city opportunities without all the baggage."
Henderson said the school district has also improved tremendously in its academic offerings.
From the Spanish Immersion Program -- geared towards teaching kindergartners Spanish -- to multiple learning academies throughout the district, the school system has much to offer.
"The district is the fourth largest school system in the state," she said. "And there are lots choices and options for parents."
