The Cumberland County school system continues to evolve to serve its growing student population.
Three new schools will be open in the system for the 2007-08 school year.
The Howard Health and Life Sciences High School has relocated from the campus of Douglas Byrd High School to the former Young Howard Elementary School on Camden Road. Its phone number is 485-1634.
The Mae Rudd Williams School will be an alternative school for students in grades six through 12 in Spring Lake. Its number is 436-4381. It replaces Mae Rudd Williams Elementary School, an all-day kindergarten, which will become a part of Manchester Elementary.
The Fuller Performance Learning Center is a specialized high school with an open campus and classrooms that resemble professional workplaces for students who might not do well in traditional high schools. The school is on Jasper Street, off Murchison Road.
The school system's Web Academy offers more than 85 high school courses throughout the regular school year and during a summer session, including honors and advanced placement courses.
The academy allows students to take part in distance learning. Web Academy credit can be transferred to any school in the state.
All courses are aligned with the North Carolina curricula and address every required competency. The environment supports collaborative learning among students and teachers through the worldwide computer network.

Drevon Britt How long have you lived in the area? "All my life." How do you get involved in the community? "I collect uniforms for middle school students," says Drevon, a 15-year-old Westover High School student who started the organization Recycle Uniforms Now. "Me and my counselors got together and came up with an idea to do this." Tip: People can bring school uniforms in good condition to guidance counselors at schools that use them. Fayetteville Urban Ministry at 701 Whitfield St. also collects them. Its phone number is 483-5944. |
Web Academy students read and do their own research. Then, the students log on in real time with a teacher two times a week. Homework assignments are uploaded.
The Web Academy is free to Cumberland County students, though they need a computer with Internet access. Students must fill out an application for admission.
