Libraries

The Cumberland County Public Library & and Information Center has a lot to offer to both newcomers and residents - everything from story time for children to book clubs for both teens and adults.

The Headquarters Library is downtown at 300 Maiden Lane, and six other locations are scattered throughout the county. Each offers free classes, Internet access, a foreign language collection, book-signing events and book sales. The Headquarters Library now offers a class called Hola Amigos, which introduces children to Spanish.

During the year, the Friends of the Library hosts a talk and meet-and-greet with North Carolina authors. It has hosted authors such as Pamela Duncan and Nicholas Sparks.

For more information about the library and its programs, visit www.cumberland.lib.nc.us or call 483-1580.

Sue Buford

How long have you lived in the area? She was born here, then moved away but came back at age 14.

What do you do in your free time? "I like the movies, and I'm an avid reader." She goes to the movies almost every weekend, usually with her husband in tow, "and he hates them if it's not really good and fast-paced." The movies give her a bit of escape from the real world. "For about two or three hours, I'm in a different place if it's a good movie."

Tip: Go to the Carmike Wynnsong 7 theater in the Bordeaux neighborhood off Village Drive. "I always go to Wynnsong. That's my first choice because they're not as crowded, especially for any big premieres, stuff that's sold out" at other theaters.

Miniature golf

Fayetteville is the birthplace of the original Putt-Putt miniature golf course. Even though Putt-Putt has long since left its home, there are other miniature golfing venues.

Round-A-Golf on Skateway Drive is just off Raeford Road. The facility has two 18-hole courses and is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. The hours tend to be shorter in the fall and winter. For more information, call 860-7800.

Mountasia Fantasy Golf is next to Omni Cinemas on Sycamore Dairy Road. The golf center has two 18-hole courses. Hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4 to 10 p.m. Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Summer prices are $5 for 18 holes and $8 for 36. For more information, call 487-6001.

Bowling

If you like bowling, Fayetteville has some lanes that are right up your alley.

  • Lafayette Lanes at 3313 Raeford Road, 484-0113
  • B&B Bowling Lanes at 3003 Fort Bragg Road, 484-5178
  • North View Lanes at 5307 Ramsey St., 822-6446

Whether roller skating is your thing or you'd rather hit the ice, Fayetteville's skating scene has something for everyone.

Round-A-Bout skating rink has two locations for roller skating: Eutaw Shopping Center off Bragg Boulevard and Skateway Drive off Raeford Road near Seventy-First High School. For more information, call 484-4465 or 860-8900.

Cleland Multipurpose Sports Complex on Fort Bragg has an ice rink that is open to the public. For more information, call 396-5127.

You can hit the obstacles at the Mega Skate Plaza at the corner of Robeson and Blount streets downtown. The plaza opened in June. The 45,000-square-foot indoor skate park includes Duh!
