Nothing can soil a budding friendship with a new neighbor more than an obnoxious pet. So know the rules and don't clip the ties that bind you and your neighbors.

In Cumberland County, you may have up to three adult dogs; there is no limit on the number of cats. There is no limit on the number of pets a Fayetteville resident can own.

Dogs and cats must be registered with Cumberland County Animal Control. The fee is $7 per animal.

If your dog or cat is 4 months or older, it must be vaccinated against rabies.

The animal control department impounds stray dogs and cats. Untagged animals are kept for three days before they're put up for adoption or euthanized. Tagged animals are kept for 14 days. For laws elsewhere in the Cape Fear region, visit each county's Web site.

If you're looking for a pet to adopt, there are several no-kill shelters in the Cape Fear region, including the Fayetteville Animal Protection Society at 3927 Bragg Blvd. Links to shelters, as well as animal rescue groups, are available at www.910pets.com or www.petfinder.com.
