Transportation

Where do you want to go? Whether you're heading across town or around the world, here's the information you need to get started.

TRAINS

If you want to ride the rails, you can grab a seat on an Amtrak passenger train in either Fayetteville or Southern Pines. Four trains pass through Fayetteville each day - two headed to New York, one to South Carolina and one to Florida. The station at 472 Hay St. is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to 5:45 a.m.

Southern Pines' station is at 235 N.W. Broad St. The unmanned station is open from 4 a.m. to 6:15 a.m. and from 9:30 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. each day. The Silver Star, an Amtrak passenger train, stops at Southern Pines twice daily on its run between New York and Florida.

To book tickets, visit www.amtrak.com or call (800) 872-7245.

PLANES

Two commercial airlines fly out of Fayetteville to hubs in the South.

The Fayetteville Regional Airport is served by US Airways and ASA/The Delta Connection. US Airways takes passengers to its Charlotte hub while ASA/Delta Connection flies to Atlanta. To check flight times, call US Airways at (800) 428-4322 or Delta at (800) 221-1212.

If you need ground transportation, you can call one of the five rental car companies or 15 taxicab companies that serve the Fayetteville airport. Their phone numbers can be found under the heading "Ground Transportation" on the airport's Web site, www.flyfay.com.

BUSES

FAST - the Fayetteville Area System of Transit - runs 10 bus routes and two shuttle routes from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Most routes start and end at the FAST transfer center at 147 Old Wilmington Road, which is between Person and Russell streets.

Fare machines require exact change, so remember to bring lots of quarters. The regular fare is $1. Senior citizens and the disabled pay a 35-cent fare.

To find out about route times and stops, call 433-1747 or visit www.fayettevillenc.biz/fast.

For long-distance travel, visit the Greyhound station at 324 Person St. The station is open 24 hours a day. To buy a ticket or check a schedule, call 483-2580 or (800) 231-2222 or visit www.greyhound.com.
