Lee County
Nestled between resort heavy Moore County and fast growing Wake County, Lee County provides quick access to top notch golf courses and high-tech jobs.
Some of the world’s largest corporations — Coty, Caterpillar, Moen, Pfizer and others — have operations in Lee County.
Frontier Spinning and Lee Brick and Tile Co., some of the county’s oldest employers, hint at the county’s history as a brick, tobacco, furniture and textile hub.
While it is one of the state’s smaller counties, more than 60,000 people live there. The county has two incorporated towns — Sanford and Broadway — and many crossroads communities.
Tobacco Road, which was named by Golf Digest as one of the most difficult golf courses in America, is located along the southern edge of the county in an area called the Sandhills.
Carolina Trace Golf and Country Club — a gated community with two 18-hole Robert Trent Jones courses — is often used as a backdrop for political campaigns and large-scale community fundraisers.
The county also has an active professional theater. The Temple Theatre in downtown Sanford produces its own shows and offers a youth conservancy — a sort of summer camp.
Thousands of people flock to the Sanford Pottery Festival, which is held the weekend before Mother’s Day.
The 70-year-old Lee County Regional Fair and the Broadway Our Way Festival, which turns three in 2011, also draw a crowd.
Deep River Sporting Clays, Devil’s Ridge Motocross, the Civil War-era Endor Iron Furnace and the pick-your-own Gross Farms are also located in the county.
