Where are soldiers deployed?

Afghanistan is one of the most likely places to find a Fort Bragg soldier away from Fort Bragg.

The 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade deployed in April with about 2,400 people and 117 helicopters to southern Afghanistan for a year. They initially will work for a Dutch two-star general in the NATO command structure.

The 82nd Airborne Division headquarters departed in May to be in charge of NATO operations in eastern Afghanistan.

The 82nd Airborne Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team is preparing to go to Afghanistan in late summer. Brigade combat teams have about 3,500 soldiers.

Fort Bragg's 3rd and 7th Special Forces groups have rotated back and forth to Afghanistan.

The Fort Bragg soldiers will be working for Fort Bragg alumni in Afghanistan. Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal is in charge in Afghanistan. Brig. Gen. Ed Reeder commands special operations there.

The 82nd Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team is spending 2009 in Iraq.

The N.C. National Guard's 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team deployed this spring to Iraq for its second tour of duty in that country. The brigade has hopes of being one of the last units to do that duty as emphasis shifts from Iraq to Afghanistan.

Special operations soldiers constantly deploy around the world with much less fanfare. They might be working in embassies or on missions that will not become pubicly known until years later, if ever.

Fort Bragg's 4th Psychological Operations Group sends MIST - Military Information Support Teams - everywhere from Africa to the Philippines to use a variety of methods to influence behavior in foreign countries.
