You can find freebies

It's been a big year for freebies across this country - and Fayetteville's been no different. We keep an updated list of freebies - ranging from fun for the kids to things you can get for free on your birthday - at blogs.fayobserver.com/free/

Here's just a tiny sample. Enjoy. It's free.

It's not like it costs an arm and a leg to get into Cape Fear Botanical Garden on regular days. But during certain days throughout the year, it won't cost you a thing. (Example: Admission is free from noon until 5 p.m. on Nov. 1.)

There's tons of free music around here, including many of the concerts that go on throughout the year at Festival Park. Among them are concerts in the Fayetteville After Five series, which happens on the third Thursday evening of the month, May through October.

Free paper cones of cold water. They're available at two stations along the Cape Fear River Trail. This may not seem like much while you're reading this. But if you're out on the trail on a hot day, they mean the world.

You want to watch a movie outside for free? The Fayetteville Police Department and others join together for an Operation Ceasefire offer a free movie series that moves to a different community center each month during the summer. And folks with military IDs can take advantage of Family Flix in the Grove near Throckmorton Library on Fort Bragg during many months of the year. (Look for more details on both at the Freebie Finder blog.)

5. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office provides free fingerprinting kits. If you would like one, go to the Law Enforcement Center at 113 Dick St. Speak to the receptionist in the lobby who should have those on hand.
